Miracles in Exodus

The book of Exodus recounts the incredible story of the Israelites' deliverance from the hands of the Egyptians to a land flowing with milk and honey. We are going to cover the major miraculous events found in Exodus:

The Burning Bush

  • Exodus 3:1 - 14
    • God reveals himself to Moses in a bush consumed by fire, but is not burning. Moses in his curiosity approaches the bush to investigate what his mind can not comprehend. Fire but no burning??

God addresses Moses Doubts

  • Exodus 4: 1 - 17
    • God informs Moses he has been chosen to lead the Israelites to freedom. Moses, feeling inadequate being selected by the God of the Universe asks for validation. God then turns Moses staff into a serpent and infects his hand with leprosy, before returning both to their original states.

God shows Egypt he is the One True God

  • Exodus 7:14 -25
    • The water in The Nile (and all other water sources) turned to blood. Most of the animals die and the water is undrinkable. 
  • Exodus 8:1 - 32
    • The land of Egypt is infested with frogs, gnats, lice and flies. 
  • Exodus 9:1 - 35
    • All Egyptian livestock is killed by a disease.
    • Boils break out on the Egyptians and their livestock.
    • A hailstorm with fire devastates Egypt, killing people, livestock, and crops. 
  • Exodus 10:4 - 23
    • A massive swarm of locusts infest the remaining crops destroying their food source and darkness covers Egypt for 3 days. 
  • Exodus 12:12 - 30
    • The Angel of Death visits every household not displaying the blood of a lamb on the door and kills the first born child and livestock of each home.

God Parts the Red Sea

  • Exodus 14:14 - 31
    • After all the plagues, Pharaoh finally reluctantly allows the Israelites to leave Egypt, but changes his mind and sends his army to bring them back. God parts the Red Sea allowing the Israelites to walk through on dry land and then returns the Red Sea to normal as the Egyptian army is trying to cross, killing them in their pursuit.

Bitter Waters Made Sweet

  • Exodus 15:22 - 27
    • As the Israelites wander in the wilderness of Shur for 3 days, they become desperate for water. They discover water in Maran, but true to the name of the area, the water is bitter. God instructs Moses to throw a tree into the water, turning the water sweet.

Manna, Quail and Water Provided as sustenance

  • Exodus 16:1 - 17:7
    • The Israelites are now wandering in the wilderness of Sin and they are accusing the Lord of bringing them into the wilderness to allow them to die of hunger. They begin to believe they were better off eating all they wanted as slaves in Egypt. In response to their complaints, God provides Quail every evening and manna every morning. While they are still in this wilderness, they begin to accuse the Lord of allowing them to die of thirst as well. God instructs Moses to strike a rock in Horeb and water begins to flow from the rock.

Victory over the Amalekites

  • Exodus 17: 8 - 13
    • The Amalekites attempt to rid the land of the Israelites through war! Moses stands on the top of the hill overlooking the battle with the rod of God in his hand. Whenever the rod is held high in the air, the Israelites begin to win the fight. Whenever his hand begins to lower, defeat begins. To ensure victory, Aaron and Hur each hold up one of Moses hands until the the sun sets and the Israelites are victorious.
